Final Grenfell Tower Inquiry Report: The deaths that occurred were all avoidable.
The fire at the 23-storey building in London’s North Kensington district, which broke out after midnight on 13 June 2017, killed 72 people. It was the deadliest residential fire in the UK since World War II. “The simple truth is that the deaths that occurred were all avoidable,” wrote Martin Moore-Bick, chairman of the public inquiry, in the nearly 1,700-page final report of the six-year long inquiry. The inquiry findings place responsibility for the failures on several organizations.
“Not all of them bear the same degree of responsibility for the eventual disaster, but as our reports show, all contributed to it in one way or another, in most cases, through incompetence, but in some cases, through dishonesty and greed,” Moore-Bick said further. In total, the commission issued 58 recommendations, including for the construction industry, government and fire & rescue services.
